Thanksgiving Banner
This is my nephew's first Thanksgiving (he's the adorable little guy in the photo) so I thought why not make a tutorial showing you how awesome our print on fabric is and also make my sister a keepsake at the same time. This is an easy and fun craft project that can be created solo, with the family or with a group of friends. Tumble dye is just about the easiest thing to use and the fusible web has always been my favorite adhesive that leaves virtually no trace. The best part is that you can customize all of the elements to create whatever you want, from the colors to the imagery. Make banners for holiday gatherings, birthday or retirement parties, festivals etc. You could even make customized medieval banners...you know, if you're into that kind of thing.
Shopping list:
- White Cotton Banner (we used a 13"x20")
- Double Stick Fusible Web sheets
- Print on Cotton sheets (we used C4 - Artist Canvas 6.5oz
- Tumble Dye Spray (we used dye #s 7, 23, and 47)
- Fabric Markers (we used a black Sharpie)
- Newsprint or some sort of cloth for spraying dyes or a bin to catch over spray You'll need an iron to adhere the fusible web. Also, I ended up using a sharpie instead of a fabric marker it just looked better.
Let's get started!
My first step is to use the tumble dye to create a colored background on the banner. First I laid out some newsprint to cover my spray area. Then I used a bin with an upside down dish drying rack. This helps catch the overspray and let the excess dye drip off. In hindsight it would have been good to cover the wood dowel in tape so I didn't get dye on it.
For this banner I used the following Tumble Dyes: # 7 (Orange), # 23 (Red) and # 47 (Mustard). Shake each bottle slightly before use and then spray each color as needed. I started with a base of mustard then orange then red. Although, I found the red to be too pink so I used very little red and instead I used a lot of mustard.
Next step is to print out an image on the Print on Cotton sheets and trim off any excess white borders.
Air dry your banner and use a hot iron to heat set. Next add your image to the banner by using the Double Stick Fusible Web sheets.
You can use any opaque fabric marker to add personalised art or writing. Keep in mind the darker you dye the banner then the harder it will be to see the marker, which is why I ended up using the black sharpie in the end.
Hang your family banner anywhere to celebrate the Thanksgiving season or give it as a gift to your loved ones.
